Fellbagger privacy policy

Fellbagger is made by Fellside Digital ("we", "us"). This policy explains what the app does with information about you. The short version: almost everything stays on your phone, and we have designed it that way on purpose.

Who is responsible

What stays on your phone
Fellbagger has no accounts and no sign-in. The following is stored only on your device and is never sent to us:
- Your ascent log — which fells you have bagged and when
- Your recorded walks, including the GPS track of each walk
- Your settings, and whether you have bought Fellbagger Pro
- The app's diagnostics log (used only if you choose to copy it and send it to us yourself)
Because we never receive this information, we cannot see it, recover it, or delete it for you. Deleting the app deletes all of it. You can export any walk or route as a GPX file at any time if you want a copy.
Location
The app uses your phone's location to:
- Show where you are on the map and how far you are from each fell
- Record the track of a walk while you are recording one
- Bag summits automatically as you reach them (a Fellbagger Pro feature)
While you are recording a walk, the app keeps using your location in the background — with your phone in your pocket or the screen off — so the recording continues and summits are still detected. This stops when you end the walk. On iPhone the app also reads the barometer, on-device, to measure ascent more accurately than GPS alone.
Your location is processed entirely on your phone. It is not sent to us or to anyone else. You can turn location access off at any time in your phone's settings; the app still works for logging fells by hand.
What leaves your phone, and where it goes
Some features need the internet. Each is listed below with exactly what is sent. None of them includes your name, an account, or your ascent history.

Like any internet request, these carry your phone's IP address to the service receiving them. Our own servers keep standard, short-lived access logs (IP address, time, what was requested) for security and to see how much capacity we need. Crash reports never include your location, your walks, or your ascent log, and are kept by Sentry for 30 days. Map tiles are cached on your phone so that the maps work offline and the same area is not requested again.
Open-Meteo, OpenStreetMap, OpenTopoMap and Ordnance Survey each have their own privacy policies covering the requests they receive.
Purchases
Fellbagger Pro is a one-time purchase made through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google handle the payment and hold your payment details; we never see them. The app records on your phone that the purchase was made, and can restore it from your Apple or Google account if you reinstall.
Notifications
Summit notifications are generated on your phone. The app does not use push notifications and does not send a notification token to any server.
Children
There is no minimum age for using Fellbagger. The app collects no personal information that requires consent, and shows no advertising. Any future feature that involves sharing photos or other content with us will be open only to people aged 16 or over, and will have its own clear consent step.
The legal basis for what we do
Under UK data protection law we rely on:
- Performance of a contract — providing the app you have installed, including the weather, map and content features above
- Legitimate interests — crash reporting, so that we can keep the app working; and short-lived server logs for security
We do not sell information about you, we do not use advertising or tracking SDKs, and we do not use analytics that profile you.
Your rights
Because we hold almost nothing about you, most rights are exercised simply by managing the app on your own phone. You still have the right to ask us what we hold, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to our use of it, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month.
Hill data
Fell and summit data in the app comes from the Database of British and Irish Hills (hill-bagging.co.uk/dobih), used under the CC BY 4.0 licence. This is about the hills, not you.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app does with your information, we will update this page and the "last updated" date, and describe the change in the app's release notes. Continuing to use the app after a change means the new policy applies.
